4 Indians among MIT’s top 35 innovators
Two Indians and two persons of Indian origin figure among Top 35 Innovators under-35 in the latest list of Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Technology Review, the world’s oldest Technology Magazine established in 1899.
Ajit Narayanan, Invention Labs, Chennai and Aishwarya Ratan, Yale University, who were part of TR35 India Winners announced in March 2011, have made it to the annual list of people who exemplify the spirit of innovation in business and technology.
The honourees are blazing new paths in a wide range of fields, including medicine, energy, communications, IT, consumer technology, entertainment, and robotics, Cambridge, Massachusetts, based institution announced Wednesday.
Chennai—based Ajit Narayanan, 30, was selected for his work on affordable speech synthesizers. He is currently working with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to improve the quality of the speech synthesis. He also plans to use mobile app stores to distribute a version of his software with about 90 percent of the full Avaz system’s functionality.
Bihar's new tool to fight corruption - YouTube
Patna, Aug 26 (IANS) Bihar, for years a metaphor for backwardness, will now harness modern communiction tools to nail corruption. It will expose officials seeking bribes in welfare schemes by uploading clips of complaints against them on the video-sharing website YouTube.

No Rapunzel, schoolgirl may die if she combs her hair
London, Aug 18 (IANS) A schoolgirl in Scotland has a rare condition following which she has been asked not to comb her hair too vigorously as it could lead to her brain shutting down.
Megan Stewart, 13, has a rare condition - Hair Brushing Syndrome - which means she must avoid wearing polyester or touching balloons. Any contact with electrical charges could confuse her brain into switching itself off or sending signals to her heart and lungs to make them do so, Daily Express reported.

For the last few months walkers on Mumbai’s Juhu Beach have been treated to surreal visions of ships out of water. While they no doubt draw crowds of curious onlookers, the presence of these vagabond vessels has raised questions about environmental safety and coastal security. August 7, 2010, an oil spill from the collision of two ships, one of which bore a Panamanian flag, washed up on Mumbai’s coastline, causing damage to the coastal mangrove belt, contaminating the shore and threatening the livelihood of fisherfolk in the region. One of the vessels bore a Panamanian flag. Ten months later MV Wisdom, bearing a Singapore flag, ran aground at Juhu Beach and became something of a tourist attraction until it was removed many days later. June 30, the unmanned MV Pavit drifted into Mumbai mysteriously and ran aground off Versova. Last week, in the third such incident in three months, the Panamanian cargo vessel MV Rak capsized and sank off the Mumbai coast. Are these stray, unconnected incidents? Or do they point to a failure on the part of the Coast Guard to police our waters effectively? While the threat to marine environment and fisheries industry looms large, one cannot forget that the terrorists who carried out the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai arrived by boat. Or that just last week, the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report pointed out vulnerable gaps in India’s coastal security. The question remains unanswered: What are these ships doing here?

Ambani dream house stands on shaky ground
Is the Maharashtra government dillydallying on ordering a CBI inquiry into the issue of the alleged illegal sale of Waqf land to industrialist Mukesh Ambani for his 27- storey ultra luxury home that is worth nearly $ 2 billion? The state government had received a letter from the Union government in June, asking it to consider ' referring' the matter to the premier investigating agency to probe the land deal. The state has, however, not taken any decision on the matter yet.
